Ice bathing - cold winter fun
Ice bathing in the Alps – trend, test of courage or biohacking?
Anyone who browsed popular social media platforms last winter couldn't have missed the all-time trend: ice bathing. We'll tell you what it's all about and whether you should try it on your vacation in the Alps.
Did you know that ice bathing has a long tradition in many northern countries? In Finland, Sweden, and Russia, swimming in an ice hole is quite 'normal'.
Also interesting: in science, water temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius are referred to as ice swimming, while anything above 5 degrees Celsius is considered winter swimming. But whether it's 4 or 9 degrees Celsius, both are very cold!
As with everything, the question of the purpose of ice bathing arises, besides the great photos and videos for Instagram, of course ;)
Advantages
Those who overcome their fears and regularly step into the ice-cold water will definitely benefit from the positive effects:
- Feelings of happiness
Ice baths report euphoric feelings after the bath, which is due to the release of adrenaline and endorphins. - Becoming more resistant and resilient to stress
The brief, extreme cold in the cold water triggers a positive stress response. This increases the body's resilience.
- Strengthening the immune system
Regular ice baths are said to strengthen the immune system, which means you get sick less often.
- Reducing inflammation levels
Cold ensures that fewer inflammatory reactions occur in the body.
Tips
- Only go ice bathing if you are really fit. If you have heart or circulatory problems, ice bathing is taboo for you. If you are unsure, seek medical advice beforehand.
- It is best to start the ice bathing season gently and go swimming outside in the fall. Alternating baths and cold showers are also good preparation for an ice bath.
- Never enter cold water alone or unattended!
- Wear clothing: cover your head and hands.
- Enter cold water slowly. Do not jump in – risk of cold shock!
- Make sure you breathe calmly.
- Do not submerge your head! Only go in the water up to your chest.
- Stay in the water for a short time at first; a few seconds are enough. With practice, you can gradually increase the length of time you stay.
- Get out of the water as soon as you feel uncomfortable or tired.
- Warm up quickly after the cold bath. Stand on a dry towel and dress warmly.
Please remember: Ice bathing is not a competitive sport!
It's not about who stays in the water longer! If you dare to go into the cold water, you're already the coolest sock in our eyes 😉
