Stay fit through the winter with roller training
Are you already looking forward to spring and your first ride? Almost all cyclists are probably familiar with the heavy legs and reduced fitness after the winter break. Here are a few tips on how to structure your winter training and how to start the 2024 cycling season well-trained.
Indoor training - all "roles" at a glance
fixed role
Here, the rear wheel is clamped into the roller, creating friction on the tire and resistance.
There are special tires available that are suitable for the roller and thus protect your road bike's tires.
PS: Depending on the roller and tire, it can get a bit loud! ✈️
free role
You're probably familiar with the free roller from cycling events. It's often used by cyclists to warm up. The bike isn't clamped and is therefore not fixed. This frame consists of two rollers at the back and one at the front. You balance your racing bike on the roller while riding, and you'll hardly feel any resistance.
Warning: Your sense of balance is required here! 🤫
Wheel-off trainer
Wheel-off trainers are currently experiencing a big boom. Your tire is removed, and the chainring is already mounted on the trainer. This allows you to optimally adjust the resistance. Your neighbors will also be happy, because the wheel-off trainer isn't very loud! 😉

Summer and winter - supplementary training is the key
To train effectively, your workout shouldn't just be on the bike! It's best to supplement your training with muscle training and appropriate mobility exercises!
Advantages of a roller trainer in winter
- You can train whenever you want, regardless of daylight
- and there's no such thing as bad weather, because your pain cave is always ready
- There are no traffic lights, so every road cyclist is happy when their average speed isn't ruined by a red light
- Efficient training, without rolling phases, because thanks to the apps, you can train very specifically
- But the best part is yet to come: You can wear short bibs even in winter!
Thermoregulation on the roll
On the roller, you miss the wind, which normally cools your body temperature. If the temperature rises too much, this can lead to an increase in your heart rate!
That's why you should definitely make sure you drink enough fluids during your roller training! It's best to position your bike next to a window or in the garage! This way, you'll get enough cooling and fresh oxygen! You can also prepare yourself for your first spring outdoor rides in terms of temperature!
Tips from the pros 😉
- Make sure your sitting position is correctly adjusted!
- Use a rubber mat as a base, then your neighbors will also be happy.
- For a two-hour session on the roller, you should drink at least two bike bottles of fluid (approx. 1.5 liters).
- Watch your favorite series while you do it; then the time will pass faster!
