Closure of the Silvretta High Alpine Road in 2026
Is the Silvretta High Alpine Road on your bucket list? Then you'll have to wait a little longer – it's been closed since October 2025. Still want to experience the Bielerhöhe? No problem. We've got all the important information you need to make your Montafon adventure a success.
Why the Alpine road is closed.
The Silvretta High Alpine Road will remain closed from the Vorarlberg side this summer as well. This is due to geological surveys and the ongoing safety concerns. Despite extensive measures such as dams, rockfall protection nets, and road rerouting, the route is currently not safe to drive on.
But don't worry: You can still reach the Bielerhöhe. The Vermuntbahn cable car with tunnel bus will take you safely up there in the summer of 2026 – but without your bike.
This means: Get your bike ready, put on your hiking boots, and head out into the adventure – because you don't have to miss out on real mountain experiences even without the high alpine road.
Don't be sad! Bielerhöhe can be reached.
Nothing stands in the way of your adventure – here are your alternatives:
- You can reach Silvretta-Bielerhöhe from Vorarlberg using the Vermuntbahn cable car and the tunnel bus.
- The closure affects the Vorarlberg side of the Silvretta High Alpine Road.
- From Tyrol, you can still drive to Lake Vermunt without restrictions.
From the Explorer Hotel Montafon, you can easily reach the Vermuntbahn cable car with bus line 650. Then it's time to get off, take a deep breath, and dive into your mountain adventure. Fresh mountain air, breathtaking views, and plenty of opportunities for an active day in the Silvretta await you at the top.
Kops Reservoir instead of Biehlerhöhe with your bike!
If you're looking to rack up some serious elevation gain this summer, hop on your mountain bike or e-bike and head to the Kops Reservoir.
Good to know: This route isn't suitable for road bikes.
Once you reach the top, take a ride around the lake or find a spot for a relaxing snack with a mountain panorama. So pack a snack, hop on your bike, and get going!
