Simon Gegenheimer is a member of the mountain bike racing team and world champion in MTB Cross-Country Eliminator. We chatted with Simon, aka "The Mustache Man."

Simon, please introduce yourself in a few words!
Simon: I'm Simon Gegenheimer, originally from Karlsruhe in Baden, but I've lived in Aalen in the Ostalb region for eight years now. At least on the 100 days a year when I'm not out and about. I'm a passionate mountain biker, and even though my World Cup victories and greatest successes have come in sprints, I wouldn't necessarily call myself a sprinter.
I enjoy mountain biking far too much: on an enduro bike, on a BMX on a pump track, or on a fixie in the city. I don't ride to make money, I don't ride to become famous, I don't ride so I can fly around the world; I simply ride my bike because I love it. But don't worry: I have absolutely nothing against the side effects mentioned, like the fact that as professionals we also earn money and get to see cool places. :-)
You're known in the scene as the "Mustache Man." Please tell us what that's all about.
Simon: I grew a little beard many years ago and promptly rode it to my first World Cup podium. Since that day, the "Schnorres" logo hasn't left my hands. I'm now an honorary member of the EC-Schnorres club; there are T-shirts, caps, and I even have bicycle frames with the "Schnorres" logo on them, but that's more of a fun cult and fan culture that's developed from it. For me personally, it also expresses a bit of my personality. Going my own way, courageously, even if it's not necessarily the path everyone else takes. It's my path, and it's exactly what was meant for me.

In which category do you compete, and what has been your greatest success so far?
Simon: I compete in all mountain bike disciplines. I've already ridden World Cups in Olympic Cross-Country, the Marathon, Sprint, and Enduro. However, my greatest successes have clearly been in the sprint. I certainly don't have the strongest legs, but when it comes to medals in the very last 800 meters, I can focus and give the absolutely necessary 100%. This has worked numerous times in a World Cup victory, but the highlight was definitely the victory at the 2021 World Championships.
What's your highlight at the breakfast buffet at the Explorer Hotel?
Simon: As a sprinter, I have to say the egg station. It's a great thing and absolutely unique to the Explorer Hotels. You can make exactly what you want and need. Individually tailored to your body, your training, and your needs. During sprint preparation, I already eat my 20 eggs a week, so I'm very happy that the Explorer Hotels also rely on good, local products. You can definitely throw one more in the pan without hesitation.
Which food is always worth a sin for you?
Simon: A good cocktail🍹 If it has a lot of decorative fruit on it, that also counts as a food :-) But a sin already says that it's more of an exception. As professionals, we obviously can't participate in drinking contests at the disco every week, so I enjoy it all the more when I have the time and opportunity to drink a good and appropriate cocktail. Whether it's a Mirtillo in the Alps or a Caipirinha in Rio. Fortunately, we have relatively frequent reasons to celebrate in our team.
