Kehlsteinhaus - historic viewpoint high above Berchtesgaden

Kehlsteinhaus in Berchtesgaden
Perhaps the thought of the Kehlsteinhaus brings back your history lesson...and you're not entirely wrong. Let's refresh your brain cells a bit.
The Kehlsteinhaus was built in 1938 and is considered one of the most elaborate projects of the Nazi era. But a visit to this building is worth more than just its historical background.
The road leading from Obersalzberg to the Kehlstein parking lot is considered one of the most unique roads in the world. It covers a full 800 meters with just one bend! You're probably buzzing with questions right now. Let's answer them one by one :D
Kehlsteinhaus today
Since 1960, the Kehlsteinhaus has served as a mountain restaurant and offers visitors a unique panoramic view. P.S. The building was spared from bombing throughout the war and has thus been preserved in its original form to this day.
How do you get to the Kehlsteinhaus?
The road has been closed to private traffic since 1952. From the Explorer Hotel Berchtesgaden, you can reach the Obersalzberg parking lot in 15 minutes by car. Here you have the choice between:
Hike to the Kehlsteinhaus: approx. 2 hours.
Take the 849 bus to the Kehlstein parking lot.
Wasn't there this tunnel? ;)
Oh YES! It's located at the Kehlstein parking lot! From here, a 124-meter-long tunnel leads visitors through the rock massif to an elevator lined with mirrors and brass. This takes you inside the Kehlsteinhaus in just 41 seconds.
P.S. Of course, you can also reach the Kehlsteinhaus via the narrow footpath, but that's less of an adventure. ;)
What makes the hike to the Kehlsteinhaus so special?
Here you have a unique view of the surrounding mountains and can see not only the peaks of the Hoher Göll, Watzmann, Jenner, Hochkalter, Reiteralm and Untersberg, but also Lake Königssee and, on a really clear day, even Salzburg!
Kehlsteinhaus = Eagle's Nest?
Yes, the building has two names. It is said that during the Nazi era, a French diplomat referred to the Kehlsteinhaus as the Eagle's Nest. And this name has become a household name for this building all over the world.
Is there a specialty in the Kehlsteinhaus Restaurant?
Of course! The Chocolate Royale Cake is absolutely recommended! We won't tell you what's in it here. You absolutely have to order it during your visit.
What are the opening hours?
The Kehlsteinhaus is open from the beginning of May to the end of October (weather permitting), daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m.
Is there also a Kehlsteinhaus tour?
Of course! You'll learn all about the history of this building. The price of the tour includes the elevator ride. However, you must book the tour online: https://www.kehlsteinhaus.de/tour/
