Hiking to the Grünten in the Allgäu
After a half-hour drive from the Explorer Hotel Neuschwanstein (or about 15 minutes from the Explorer Hotel Oberstdorf), you'll reach the starting point of the hike in Burgberg. From the Burgberg village square, the path leads you steeply up Grüntenstraße.
At the "An der Halde" junction, turn left and continue past the Schützenhaus (shooting house). A few meters later, the path branches off to the left and leads you towards the Grüntenhaus. You hike through the forest and follow the forest path until you cross the Wustbach stream. The serpentine path leads you through a shady high forest to an alpine meadow. From here, it's not far to the Grüntenhaus.
At the Grüntenhaus, keep left and climb up to the transmission tower. From here, the trail continues to the Hunter's Monument, where the summit of the Grünten welcomes you. Enjoy your well-deserved summit rest and linger a while on the "Guardian of the Allgäu" before descending again.
To return, hike past the transmission station, keep left, and head toward the Alpe Obere Schwande, which is open for dining in summer. From here, the trail leads you across alpine meadows to the paved road and further to the Gasthof Alpenblick. Downhill, follow the Bachelweg turnoff and hike along the forest path down to Burgberg.
