The tour to the Breitenberg starts at the valley station of the Breitenbergbahn cable car. Here, you're almost at the Austrian border. Follow the path to the left toward the Reichenbachklamm.
If you turn around, you'll see the Falkenstein Castle ruins. King Ludwig's next project, after Neuschwanstein Castle, was supposed to be built here, but unfortunately, he was never able to realize it.
Continue on, repeatedly coming close to the Reichenbachklamm, where there are wonderful spots for a breather and a photo or two.
After a few meters of elevation, you'll see an impressive and very distinctive peak in front of you: the Aggenstein. Probably the locals' favorite mountain! Not only is it great for climbing, you can also go on beautiful hikes and stop off at the Bad Kissinger Hut.
But don't worry, the Breitenberg is just as beautiful! You'll pass the Grenzer Hut and reach a beautiful plateau. Here, follow the signpost towards Breitenberg and Ostler Hut.
Once you reach the top, you'll have a magnificent view of the Ostallgäu and its many lakes. Now you also know why people sometimes talk about the Allgäu Lake District. 😉
Overall, you have many options for getting to the Breitenberg. There's a gondola and a chairlift, so you can plan your ascent and descent as you wish. If you want to take the gondola and chairlift to the Breitenberg, it's only a 20-minute climb from the upper lift station to the summit.
You can hike the Breitenberg all year round; just make sure you have weather-appropriate gear and the necessary tour preparation!
PS: In winter, the Breitenberg is also great for tobogganing!
Refreshment tips: At the Ostlerhütte, you can enjoy delicious Kässpatzen (cheese spaetzle)! But be careful, it's closed on Tuesdays. The Hochalphütte by the chairlift also offers delicious dishes, such as Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancakes)! 🤤
