This classic route on Neustift's local mountain takes you through the striking north face of the Western Elfer Tower and delivers everything a good via ferrata needs: an alpine approach, steep sections, an exciting gorge traverse, plenty of exposure, and a summit finale that feels truly earned.

Start from your base camp in the Stubia Valley. It's about 2 kilometers from the Explorer Hotel to the Elferbahn cable car.Take the cable car to the mountain station at approximately 1,800 meters. From there, continue your ascent via the Elferhütte mountain hut towards the start of the via ferrata at around 2,180 meters. The approach takes about 1.5 hours and gradually takes you out of the valley and into the rock face. The north face awaits you on the via ferrata: first an introductory section rated C, then the traverse of the gully, and finally the crux passage rated C/D. Those who choose the narrower chimney variant will also encounter a challenging D section. Afterwards, the route continues over scree and up the steep final wall to the summit of the Western Elfer Tower at approximately 2,483 meters. The descent leads via secured sections and marked trails back towards the Elferhütte and the mountain station. You should allow approximately 4 hours for the entire tour. The approach and descent each take approximately 1.5 hours, the actual climbing time is about 1 hour. Important: This tour is not suitable for beginners. You need sure-footedness, a head for heights, via ferrata experience, and complete equipment including a helmet. There is a risk of rockfall, especially when crossing the gorge.
