121 kilometers around the Wendelstein
The Wendelstein circuit is not for a leisurely Sunday ride. This is a full-day adventure, racking up significant elevation gain, but rewarded with a tour that constantly reveals new facets of the landscape. The 121-kilometer route, with approximately 1,630 meters of elevation gain, takes you completely around the Wendelstein mountain. The mountain remains your constant companion – sometimes directly in front of you, sometimes to the side above, and later far in the distance.
Right at the Explorer Hotel Bayrischzell, you clip into your bike. The route takes you through Geitau, Hammer, and Fischbachau, initially at a relaxed pace towards the Alpine foothills. The ride is easy, your legs are warming up, and the scenery expands with every kilometer.
The route continues past Neubeuern and Nußdorf am Inn towards Samerberg . Now the more challenging part begins. With every meter of elevation gained, the view improves. The Inn Valley opens up below you, surrounded by the Hochries and Mangfall mountains, and the Wendelstein mountain is always visible somewhere in the panorama. This is precisely where the tour reveals its unique character. You're not simply covering kilometers, but constantly switching between new vistas and landscapes.
The route continues via Grainbach and Frasdorf to Aschau im Chiemgau. Passing Hohenaschau Castle, you'll enter the Prien Valley and continue towards Sachrang. The scenery changes again. The gentler, green hills gradually recede behind you, and the mountains ahead become more rugged.
And she saves the best for almost the very end. The route leads via Niederndorf and Oberaudorf towards Tatzelwurm . After many kilometers, a real test for your legs awaits. The road winds its way up through forest and mountain scenery, with occasional glimpses back down into the valley and across to the surrounding peaks. Then comes the final climb at Sudelfeld . Once again, it's time to pedal hard, curve after curve and meter after meter of elevation gain. Reaching the top, the highest point of the loop is behind you – and the return journey to Bayrischzell lies ahead.
After more than 100 kilometers, your destination slowly reappears. Bayrischzell lies below you in the valley, the last curves lead downhill, and suddenly you're back where it all began: at your base camp.
121 kilometers, 1,630 meters of elevation gain, and a complete circuit around the Wendelstein mountain. A tour for everyone who loves long days on a road bike and prefers constantly collecting new mountain views rather than just kilometers.
