From the Explorer Hotel Bayrischzell to the Wendelstein
Your mountain day starts right at the Explorer Hotel Bayrischzell. From here, head towards the town center and you'll soon reach the Königslinde (King's Linden Tree). The path continues through the small spa area, past the bandstand, and over a wooden bridge towards the Alpenfreibad (Alpine outdoor swimming pool). Here, follow the signposted hiking trail and gradually leave Bayrischzell behind.
The ascent begins shortly afterwards. The path leads you uphill, past the turnoff to the Waterfall at the Tannermühl, and on to below the Alpenstraße (Alpine Road). You hike through the first hairpin bend, pass the Niederalmen alpine pastures, and follow the path uphill in long switchbacks towards Legerwald. From here, the tour becomes more alpine. The hiking trail leads you further uphill along the Wendelsteinbach stream, partly in sunny, partly in shady sections. Step by step, you get closer to the Wendelsteinalm alpine pasture, while beautiful views of the valley open up behind you. From the Wendelsteinalm, the trail continues towards the Wendelstein massif. You climb the slope between large spruce trees until the King Maximilian Trail branches off to the right. Below the rocks, the path leads you to the Zeller Scharte and over the ridge of the Schwaigerwand to the Wendelsteinhaus. From the sun terrace of the Wendelsteinhaus, the summit is already very close. A well-maintained path with steps takes you to the highest point of the Wendelstein in about 20 minutes. At the top, a panoramic view of the Bavarian Prealps and the Alpine foothills awaits. For the return journey, you can either take the same route back to Bayrischzell or choose the alternative route via the Wendelsteinalmen and Hochkreuth. If you like, you can finish off the hike with a refreshing dip at the Grüne Gumpe (Green Pool) above the village.
