Rewarding via ferrata on the Tegelberg in the Ammergau Alps

Fancy one of the most beautiful via ferratas in the Ostallgäu? Including a view of Neuschwanstein Castle!

Then let's go! From the parking lot, follow the paved path past a wading pool and playground until you reach a steep forest road. A short while later, you'll pass a small stream and then follow the signs for the Gelbe Wand via ferrata and the Klettersteig educational trail. It will take you approximately 30-45 minutes to reach the Gelbe Wand via ferrata. Just before a stream bed, you'll reach a signposted spot where you can put on your via ferrata set and helmet.

Then follow the Gelbe Wand via ferrata for approximately 30 minutes until you reach a metal ladder. Now comes the more challenging part, as the Tegelbergsteig starts from here. You'll cross slabs, scramble up vertical walls, and follow rock ledges. But be careful, the Tegelbergsteig is a one-way trail. Alternatively, if the weather isn't good, you can follow the path to the right at the ladder and stay on the much easier Gelbe Wand via ferrata. Both via ferratas merge again at the end.

The descent is via the Gelbe Wand via ferrata, or if you want to continue to the summit, you can head down the ski slope via the Tegelberghaus and Rohrkopfhütte.

Whichever descent you choose, you'll always be able to catch beautiful views of Neuschwanstein Castle and the Alpsee behind it.

Tip: For some well-deserved refreshment after conquering the via ferrata, we recommend asking for their homemade cake at the Rohrkopfhütte and enjoying the view of the castle!
