Via Ferrata to the summit of the Alpspitze
From the Explorer Hotel in Farchant, drive (approx. 19 minutes; 9.6 km) to the valley station of the Alpspitzbahn. The cable car takes you comfortably to the starting point of your mountain tour, the mountain station at 2,050 m. Passing the mountain rescue hut, you walk at a height toward the north face of the mighty Alpspitze. After a good 15 minutes, the path forks, and you turn right, over the Alpspitze via ferrata.
From here, you can easily identify the route by the alpine red markings and the iron safety nets. Using wire ropes and several clamps, you reach a grassy ledge. From there, you have your first view of the Höllental valley and the Zugspitze. The trail continues on relatively flat terrain to the Alpspitze. You climb over a ridge to the west flank of the Alpspitze, before several clamps lead up to the summit cross (2,628 m). The unique view offers a magnificent view of the Höllental valley, the Eibsee lake, and the Zugspitze region (in good weather, even as far as Munich;))
For the descent, first take the Ostgrad via ferrata and then the Nordwand via ferrata, where you follow the alpine markings (red dots) back down to the starting point.
Good to Know;)
- You should pack a headlamp, because a long tunnel awaits you on the descent.
- In early summer or late autumn, there may still be snow!
- The via ferrata on the Alpspitze is very popular, so you should set off early during the week or on the weekend.
