From the Explorer Hotel Bayrischzell to the Tatzelwurm waterfalls

Your tour starts directly at the Explorer Hotel Bayrischzell . From here, you first head towards the town center and then on to the spa facilities. There, the actual ascent towards Sudelfeld begins. You follow the path along the stream, pass the Schönborn Chapel , and then reach the valley station of the cable car.

Below the cable car, the hiking trail leads you steadily uphill. Step by step, you leave Bayrischzell behind and gain altitude until you reach the Sudelfeld . Around 300 meters of elevation gain separate you from the valley floor on this first section. At the top, the landscape opens up, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

Near the Sudelfeld mountain inn, the direction changes: now it's downhill again. Below the inn, continue following the hiking trail towards Tatzelwurm. The route leads you from the open alpine pasture into the increasingly narrow valley of the Auerbach stream . The closer you get to your destination, the wilder the landscape becomes.

When the valley finally narrows into a gorge, the Tatzelwurm Waterfalls are not far away. Here, the water cascades over several rocky steps, plunging more than 90 meters into the depths. Well-maintained paths and bridges bring you close to the waterfalls – particularly impressive after rainy days.

Take your time here. Among the rocks, forest, and rushing water, it's pleasantly cool even on warm summer days. Sturdy footwear is still essential, however, as the descent near the Auerbach stream can require sure footing in places.

Back to Bayrischzell

For the return journey, you don't need to hike back across the Sudelfeld. During the summer season, you can board the Wendelstein Ring Line 349 at Tatzelwurm and travel comfortably back to Bayrischzell.

With your Bayrischzell guest card, the ride is free. The Wendelstein ring line runs from the beginning of May to the beginning of November . As it only runs a few times a day, you should definitely check the current timetable before your trip.
