Working in Explorer Hotels with great career advancement opportunities
My plans to head to the mountains began at the end of 2016 – but without a specific plan. After applying to several hotels, I had a trial day at the Explorer Hotel Berchtesgaden in January, which was like a belated Christmas present for me. My plan was actually to go to the mountains and work there for a year. I never would have imagined it would be more than five!
When I first entered the lobby of the Explorer Hotel, I immediately felt at home, and my gut feeling told me: You're in good hands here and you'll find your place. And that's exactly how it was. Due to a skiing accident, I was sidelined until mid-May 2017, after which I started working in housekeeping, supporting the girls on the floor. But I quickly realized that I wanted to achieve more at Explorer Hotels.
Until mid-2020, I worked in housekeeping. But since my colleagues in the lounge could no longer keep up with check-ins due to high workload, I wanted to get a taste of the Reception and Service areas and provide them with support.
Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting hotel closures, I had plenty of time to think about my path at Explorer Hotels. After the reopening in May 2020, I started in Service. Since we didn't have a Service team leader at the time, I knew that was what I wanted to do. At first, it was anything but easy to find my way in my new role as Team Leader, but things got better over time. On the advice of my then Hotel Team Manager, Andreas, I wanted to take it a step further and have therefore been Team Leader at the Reception at the Explorer Hotel Kitzbühel since the end of 2021.
What do you like about Explorer Hotels?
At Explorer Hotels, anything is possible! If you have a goal in mind, you can achieve anything. The Explorer family has grown steadily in recent years, adding more and more locations in the Alps. This gives us the opportunity to work and live in the most beautiful destinations. The individual hotels work closely together and exchange information with one another. Since Explorer standards are implemented in every hotel, you can move to any location without much training. And the atmosphere at every Explorer Hotel is very informal and supportive.
My biggest milestone actually took me from 2017 to today. I started as a chambermaid and, through my ambition, worked my way up to team leader at the reception. I'm very proud of that. But the journey isn't over for me yet. My goal is to eventually become a team manager at one of the Explorer Hotels and manage my own hotel. I'm already looking forward to experiencing amazing moments with my team and welcoming satisfied guests with shining eyes.
Has there been an experience that has stuck in your mind in particular?
Of course, there are many great moments that you experience at Explorer Hotels. But I'd like to highlight a personal highlight. In April 2018, I competed in the Spartan Race in Munich with the hotel managers from Kitzbühel and Zillertal. It was simply fantastic to start and finish together as an Explorer Team. We knew we could rely on each other, even though we don't all work together every day. For me, it was a fantastic experience and a prime example of true team spirit.
Yes, definitely! It's always interesting when we have online training sessions together and get to learn new things. Of course, seeing each other in person isn't that easy with almost 10 locations. But the managers regularly exchange information through meetings, so we can all support each other if anyone needs help. That's why I think it's great that we all work according to the Explorer Standards and receive ongoing training.
