Sustainability in outdoor sports - what you should pay attention to
Why is sustainable sportswear important?
Many manufacturers currently rely on synthetic fibers. While these artificial materials boast functionality and water repellency, synthetics are neither good for people nor the environment. A large proportion of synthetic fibers are made from petroleum and are therefore not biodegradable. Tiny synthetic fibers are also released during washing. These end up in waterways and oceans. Furthermore, per- and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are often used in the production of outdoor clothing. These ensure that the clothing is dirt- and water-repellent, but they also pollute the environment.
Environmentally friendly sportswear is made from sustainable alternatives. On the one hand, renewable natural products such as merino wool are used. Did you know that clothing made from merino wool is up to 6 times "stronger" than cotton? It is also quick-drying, odorless and anti-allergenic. Merino wool is a truly wonderful natural product!
Another sustainable alternative is sportswear made from recycled material. For example, from fishing nets or old PET bottles. With this variant, existing materials are reused and therefore significantly less energy is consumed.
- When buying outdoor clothing, make sure it's PFC-free.
- Social conditions also play an important role: Companies with the Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) label focus on socially sustainable manufacturing.
- Try going natural :) How about a merino wool shirt? Wear nature with this.
- Extend the lifespan of your outdoor clothing. Many outdoor brands offer the option to recycle your old clothing.
