Explorer Hotels reveal their ecological footprint 🌿

Climate neutrality in tourism - sustainable overnight stays at the Explorer Hotel

Our credo in construction and operation is to minimize energy losses and maximize energy generation. To ensure this doesn't remain a mere platitude, we have had our corporate carbon footprint analyzed by an independent, certified body.

CO2-neutral overall balance in the operation of Explorer Hotels

The Explorer Hotels are pioneers and leaders in sustainable tourism in the Alpine region.

Thanks to their smart passive house construction, the use of coordinated modern technologies, and building automation, the Explorer Hotels have by far the lowest CO2 footprint of comparable hotels in the Alpine region.

In numbers, it looks like this:

  • 90% less CO2 emissions
  • 85% heating energy savings
  • 60% electricity generation through PV systems
  • 100% of non-self-generated electricity is CO2-neutral
  • Use of 100% renewable energy
  • 100% CO2 savings (heating, hot water, ventilation, electricity) with surplus from the property's operation

CCF calculation at Explorer Hotels

Sustainability is a fundamental principle at Explorer Hotels. We also strive to leave a minimal ecological footprint in the area of ecology in tourism.

We therefore consciously decided to have our ecological footprint calculated using the Corporate Carbon Footprint. But what exactly is the difference?

Why is CCF calculation more specific than CO₂ footprint?

Keine Frage sollte unbeantwortet bleiben 😉
What is the difference between CO₂ footprint and Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF)?

CO₂ footprint: Refers to the emissions caused by an individual, a product, or a specific activity.

Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF): Includes a company's total greenhouse gas emissions. The following are considered:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions (e.g., heating systems, company-owned vehicles).
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy.
  • Scope 3: Indirect emissions from upstream and downstream processes (e.g., supply chains, guest and employee mobility).
CCF or CO₂ footprint - which should I calculate?

Both applications aim to contribute to the environment. The CO₂ footprint is more specific and ideal for private individuals. The CCF offers a holistic view and can be calculated for a company by independent, certified bodies.

Why are Scope 3 emissions often so difficult to measure?

Scope 3 emissions arise from activities that occur outside the direct control of a company (suppliers, guests, employees, etc.).

The information from these indirect emissions is often non-standardized or incomplete. Suppliers often use different standards, making it difficult to measure accurately. Guests also have different footprints, which cannot be fully measured during a stay. This complicates the inclusion of emissions in a CCF.

Which greenhouse gases are included in the CCF and CO₂ footprint?

Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
* Origin: Fossil fuels, deforestation, industrial processes.

Methane (CH₄)
* Origin: Agriculture (e.g., livestock farming, rice paddies), landfills, natural gas extraction.

Nitrous oxide (N₂O)
* Origin: Agriculture (fertilizers), industrial processes, combustion of fossil fuels.

Fluorinated gases (F-gases): Man-made greenhouse gases, usually in small quantities.
* Origin: Refrigerants, industrial gases, electronics industry, semiconductor production.

All greenhouse gases have different lifetimes and varying global warming potentials (GWPs). The CCF converts these into CO₂ equivalents (CO₂e). This standardizes their climate impact, allowing for a better comparison than the carbon footprint.

Why is it important to calculate the CCF or CO₂ footprint?

Calculating your CCF or CO₂ footprint is an important step to understand your own climate impact, plan sustainable measures and make a positive contribution to climate protection.

The Explorer Hotel is the perfect starting point for all summer sports. Whether hiking, swimming, mountain biking, or e-biking, everything is possible in Carinthia.

Whether it's energy, resource consumption or biodiversity, we measure our contribution and every improvement - We care!
