What does passive house mean?
Passive House construction is already familiar from private homes. It's a future-oriented and energy-efficient concept that combines modern architecture and sustainability while simultaneously providing a pleasant living atmosphere.
The term "passive house" inherently includes the essential characteristic of being "passive." It emphasizes passive energy generation, i.e., natural energy production, as a central principle. This means that the building uses only existing energy sources for temperature control. These are: solar radiation, body heat from the occupants, and heat from electrical appliances.
Our contribution to the SDGs
A passive house is characterized by the following key aspects:
- A passive house uses about 90% less heating energy than an older building and 75% less than an average new building.
- Heating energy consumption is only about 1.5 liters of heating oil equivalent per square meter of living space per year.
- Thanks to highly efficient thermal insulation in the exterior walls, roof, and foundation slab, no conventional heating system is needed.

Facts and figures on the passive house construction of Explorer Hotels
Since their founding, Explorer Hotels have been committed to sustainability out of conviction. The investment per hotel room in our mountain lodge construction is approximately 7% higher than in conventional construction. This innovation wasn't a drawback for us, but rather a conscious step into the future.
Depending on the location, Explorer Hotels utilize a mix of different energy sources, adapted to local conditions and employing the maximum amount of renewable energy.
For heating and hot water, Explorer Hotels use the following sustainable sources, depending on the region:
Solar thermal energy, district heating from wood waste, biogas, wood pellets, heat pump.
Electricity is supplied by a rooftop photovoltaic system. The share of self-generated electricity ranges from 30% to 55% throughout the year, depending on the region.
As a result, Explorer Hotels produce significantly less CO2 emissions than a comparable hotel of the same size and standards!
