High up on the Hochmölbing crossing in Hinterstoder in the Pyhrn-Priel region
The hike takes you over the peaks of Schrocken, Kreuzspitze, Hochmölbing, Mittermölbing, and Kleinmölbing. All five peaks are over 2,000 meters high. The tour offers magnificent views of the Stoder Valley, the Priel Group, and the Dachstein.
The starting point of the tour is the Hutterer Höss mountain station. With your Pyhrn-Priel Card, which you receive for your stay at the Explorer Hotel Hinterstoder, you can travel comfortably and free of charge by cable car and chairlift to the starting point.
From the Höss Express, you set off towards the reservoir. After enjoying the view across to the Grosser Priel and Spitzmauer, leave this to your right and take the path to the Schneeofen and further to the Schafkögel (1980 m).
Here, along hiking trail 217, begins the ascent to the Schrocken, the first 2000-meter peak on your hike. The ascent along the north ridge of the Schrocken requires surefootedness and a head for heights, as you will have to overcome a small climbing section and exposed areas, all of which are secured with ropes.
You will soon reach the summit of the Schrocken at 2281 meters and will be rewarded for your efforts with a magnificent view!
Let's continue
After you've sufficiently enjoyed the view, keep to the right of the summit, descend a few meters, and hike slightly uphill along trail no. 219 past the Kaminspitz (2,322 m) to the higher* Kreuzspitze at 2,327 meters*.
The trail now leads relatively flat along the easily accessible rocky ridge to the Hochmölbing at 2,336 meters, the highest point of this tour.
Next follows a ridge hike with magnificent views of the Stodertal Valley, the peaks of the Priel Group, as far as the Dachstein and the Lower Tauern. You'll pass two more high mountains: Mittermölbing (2318 m) and Kleinmölbing (2160 m).
The descent takes you via the Hochmölbing Hut (trail no. 281) and Sumperalm, then over the Türkenscharte along the Salzsteig (trail no. 209) to the Bärenalm.
It's definitely worth stopping at Schaffereith at the end of the Hinterstoder valley to reward yourself with a delicious regional snack. The last few kilometers to the hotel are now in the valley along the Steyr River.
