Challenging tour over the Jubiläumsgrat in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The region around the Zugspitze has a lot to offer. But what happens when you combine the Zugspitze with another ultimate summit: the Alpspitze?

Before you begin: This high-alpine tour requires alpine experience, endurance, and a secure grasp of Grade III (UIAA). Surefootedness and a head for heights are also required.
Furthermore, the tour should only be undertaken in safe and good weather conditions!

If a thunderstorm is approaching, an emergency descent leads via the Brunntalgrat to the Knorrhütte.

Tour Description

Well and safely prepared, you can finally get started: You start from your Explorer Hotel in Farchant and head towards the Zugspitzbahn cable car. The first cable car departs at 7:35 a.m. Once at the top, the route begins directly on a cable-secured path to the Zugspitze summit, then along the trail toward Höllental, and immediately afterward, turn right onto a path to the Jubiläumsgrat. On the ridge, you now walk along several rock slabs (climbing difficulty I to II). Here, you'll soon encounter your first crux of the tour: on the descent, a passage exposed on both sides, rated difficulty III. Here, you'd better secure yourself with your own rope.

Once you've mastered this part of the tour, continue to the gap in front of the Innere Höllentalspitze, from there to the right and then to the left, and finally along the wire rope to the Mittlere Höllentalspitze. Next on your itinerary is the Höllentalgrathütte (with bivouac box). Once again along the wire rope, you climb a tower, then descend again and continue to the Vollkarspitze. Follow the trail to the "Grieskarscharte" signpost. Now, descend to the left, then cross the western side of the Hochblassen. The railing with the wire rope guides you gently uphill again over a wide ridge, which leads you to the summit of the Alpspitze. Finally, you continue over the north face ferrata to the Alpspitzbahn mountain station on the summit of the Osterfelder. The return journey to the valley is by train.
