Have you heard the myth of the sunken VW Beetle? But what's the truth behind the story about a car that supposedly disappeared in the middle of a lake – without a bridge or shoreline?
There are many surprises waiting for you at the bottom of Lake Königssee!
January 28, 1964 - The Beetle That Sinks: A cold night in the depths of winter, and Lake Königssee is covered in ice. However, it's not thick enough to support the weight of a car, so it's blocked off by a barrier. Pedestrians, however, are allowed to cross the lake along a marked route.
J. H., the 52-year-old driver, had already been turned away by the night watchman of the state shipping company at the entrance to the ice rink. But the driver, who knew the area well, turned around and simply drove around the Seelände – to the seaside resort, which was still open at the time.
The odyssey began: over an approximately 40 cm high embankment, he continued onto the ice rink. His destination was St. Bartholomä. And he arrived there. According to the police, the driver, coming from St. Bartholomä, skidded at about the height of Nasser Palfen and apparently lost his bearings.
No ice - no road - The driver continues to head toward the western side of Lake Königssee. However, the lighting system appears to be defective, because near the Falkensteinerwand, he drives his Beetle directly from the ice into the part of the lake that is no longer covered in ice, without any sign of braking – which marks the sad end of the trip.
So this "treasure" will likely remain at the bottom of Lake Königssee for many, many years to come. Want to know exactly where the accident site is? Then take the boat to St. Bartholomä and ask the captain. Maybe he'll show you the spot ;-)
