Excursion destination in Berchtesgaden - the Königssee
The photo of St. Bartholomä at Königssee probably looks familiar to you – after all, it's one of the most popular photo motifs at Königssee. The good thing is, if you're on vacation at the Explorer Hotel Berchtesgaden, you can reach Bavaria's most famous lake in just a 10-minute walk, and after a relaxing boat ride, you'll be there and can see St. Bartholomä in real life.
But do you actually know what makes this lake so special?
Well protected between steep rock faces, the crystal-clear, shimmering emerald-green Königssee lies in Berchtesgaden National Park. Honestly, we know it sounds very cheesy, but there's no other way to describe what is arguably Germany's most beautiful lake. You also have a stunning view of the rugged cliffs of the Watzmann and the Berchtesgaden Alps. And the best part is, you can say you've been to Germany's only Alpine National Park.

- Many spots are only accessible by boat, so hiking around them like at other lakes is not possible here.
- A sunken VW Beetle lies at the bottom of Lake Königssee.
By boat across the lake
To best admire the impressive natural scenery surrounding the lake, you have to take a boat ride. By the way, only electric boats operate here because we're in the national park. Cool, right?
P.S. Have you heard the famous Königssee Echo? During the boat ride, a trumpet player plays every time, and the sound echoes off the rocks up to seven times.
Hiking at Lake Königssee
If you want a great view from above, get off at the "Kessel" stop and hike first up to the Königsbachalm (1200 meters) and then to the Gotzenalm (1685 meters). This moderately difficult tour is one of the most beautiful hikes in the Berchtesgadener Land, not least because of the stunning panorama!
St. Bartholomew
After a half-hour boat ride, you'll reach the St. Bartholomä peninsula with its famous pilgrimage church on Lake Königssee. The combination of church and former hunting lodge, with its red roofs set against the imposing eastern face of the Watzmann mountain, is the landmark of Lake Königssee.
Ice Chapel
The deepest permanent snowfield in the German Alps is located at the foot of the Watzmann East Face: the Ice Chapel.
From the boat dock in St. Bartholomä, it's a 1.5-2 hour walk to the Ice Chapel.
Caution: The Ice Chapel is constantly in danger of collapsing; entering it is life-threatening! You can also enjoy viewing it from the outside and taking photos ;-)
Röthbach Falls
After another 20 minutes from St. Bartholomä, you'll reach the Salet stop. From here, hike 3 km along the Obersee to the Fischunkelalmm. Beyond this, you'll pass through a small forest, and then you'll see the natural spectacle cascading imposingly into the valley.
The Röthbachfall is Germany's highest waterfall with a drop of 470 meters.
