Long-distance hiking with pleasure: from Carinthia to the Italian sea via the Alpe Adria Trail
On the long-distance hiking trail, you'll pass mountains like Austria's highest mountain, the Großglockner, and countless famous lakes like Lake Millstatt, Lake Faakersee, or Lake Ossiach - so don't forget your swimwear in summer ;)
Long-distance hiking on the Alpe Adria Trail: From the mountain to the sea
Along with the Way of St. James, the Alpe Adria Trail is one of the most famous and beautiful long-distance hiking trails, stretching from Carinthia, Slovenia, and Friuli Venezia Giulia to Muggia on the Adriatic Sea, covering 750 km in 43 stages. Trails 15-17 lead through the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. If you'd like to gain a few more meters of elevation, you can add stages 15-16 of the Alpe Adria Trail from the Langalmtal valley to the Falkerthaus via the Lärchenhütte. Otherwise, you can start the hike directly from your accommodation, the Explorer Hotel Bad Kleinkirchheim.
From here, stage 17 continues via Untertschern towards Arriach, the geographical center of Carinthia. The stages lead you through impressive scenery - did you know that this trail was voted Austria's most beautiful long-distance hiking trail in 2018?
Each stage is around 20 km long and requires a walking time of around 6 hours. The trail is consistently signposted, so it's difficult to get lost here ;) The route consists of existing hiking trails, connects them, and can always be walked in both directions. At the end of each stage, there is accommodation where you can set up camp for the night.
Alpine hiking - with pleasure!
The hike is ideal for sure-footed mountain hikers, and the small elevation difference between the stages means you can enjoy every single step and every panorama of the surrounding mountains without worry! Due to the nature of the path, it is of course also possible to cross the Alps completely without luggage - depending on how long you plan to be on the trail ;)
The Alpe Adria Booking Center is a service for hikers - we work closely with several partners from Carinthia, Slovenia, and Italy to guarantee guests on the tour an optimal and safe hiking service on the long-distance trail.
This service offers services such as a shuttle service with luggage transport or, for example, group bookings including overnight stays on site.
When planning your tour, please note that the best time to travel to the Carinthia region and the Alpe Adria Trail starts in mid-June and runs until the beginning of October. The free Alpe Adria Trail app also provides helpful descriptions of the hike and much more – a small tour planner for your pocket, so to speak.
If you've explored this hike, you've probably heard of "hiking in the Garden of Eden." This serves as a metaphor for the immense diversity on the southern side of the Alpine-Adriatic region. As you hike past the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern, along lakes, streams, and rivers, all the way to the Adriatic coast, you'll experience the cultural diversity of three distinct countries, each linked by a long shared history.

On every stage, you will encounter at least one "Magical Place". A special place of harmony and the four elements. Each start/finish location is equipped with striking installations, the Alpe-Adria-Trail Infopoints: On the Austrian stages, you will find a circular platform and three information columns, the so-called "Guides." The center guide provides the most important information about the stage location, while the adjacent guides provide information about the stages leading away from the stage. On the Italian stages, this installation is in the shape of a hiker, while in Slovenia it is in the form of simple wooden panels.
