Challenging trail to the Toni Lenz Hut near the Ice Cave near Berchtesgaden
The parking lot for the Schellenberger Ice Cave is located approximately 18 minutes from the Explorer Hotel in Berchtesgaden. There you can park your car and swap your sneakers for running shoes.
The tour starts at the Ache River. Initially, the trail leads you through a beech forest, through whose treetops many rays of sunshine stream. It then quickly descends deeper into the forest. After a while, you reach the Bachgraben and then the Lochgraben with its many small pools and magnificent waterfalls. When you've covered about half the trail, leave the road and turn onto a narrower path.
The further you follow this path, the fewer the trees become, until you're only walking through fields of mountain pines. In summer, it can get very warm from here on, as the pines offer no protection from the sun and the heat builds up between the small trees. You'll continue a little further up the mountain until the pines become fewer and the hut comes into view.
If you'd like to give your body a short break, you can enjoy an isotonic drink at the hut. The descent follows the same route as the ascent.
