More and more ski tourers are enjoying the great freedom off the slopes: Seven tips on how to quickly get from your hotel bed to the ascent and into the snow

Downhill skiers love fixed bindings. Ski tourers appreciate the free heel – at least on the ascent. High heels and skins are used for the ascent. Touring is on the rise, with more and more winter sports enthusiasts appreciating the harmony with nature and the mountains – step by step. With the right equipment and a bit of knowledge, or with a mountain guide, the open ski area can be wonderfully enjoyed. Of course, beginners can also enjoy tours at the edge of the slopes. More and more cable cars are offering special packages for them. Here are seven ways to get up to speed just steps from your hotel.

Tip 1: Get out of bed and onto the Alpspitze

Let's start in our local area: Nesselwang in the Allgäu is not one of the most sophisticated ski resorts in the Alps, but it is one of the most family-friendly.

Easy ski tours can be found at the nearby Füssener Jöchle, while the Tannheimer Valley beckons with famous peaks such as Ponten, Sulzspitze, and Gaishorn. The Explorer Hotel Neuschwanstein serves as the ideal base camp. This hotel, owned by a trendy hotel group that specializes in operating designer budget hotels with high ecological standards, is ideally located for both experienced ski tourers and those who prefer to reach the top of the slopes. At the ski tourer's evening on Wednesdays, you can climb the illuminated slopes right outside the hotel door until 10 p.m. During the day, you can also reach the Alpspitze and Edelsberg near the slopes. "Up there, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the snow-covered Ostallgäu," reports hotel manager Jonas. He and his colleagues emphasize one thing: "Ski tours are not a walk in the park; everyone is responsible for their own safety." Therefore, knowledge of the area and the current avalanche situation are just as essential as appropriate equipment.

Tip 2: Classics in and around Oberstdorf

Oberstdorf not only boasts well-known ski resorts like the Fellhorn and Nebelhorn, it also offers numerous ascent options for ski tourers. Among the classics is the Sonnenkopf, while advanced skiers swear by the Großer Daumen, a ski touring mountain reached via the Nebelhorn. The Güntlespitze in the nearby Kleinwalsertal offers wide, treeless slopes. The nearby Söllereck is also ideal for guests of the Explorer Hotel Oberstdorf. A hiking trail leads safely up to the top. The slopes are open for the ladies and gentlemen with skins on Thursday evening. The slopes are theirs until 10 p.m.

Tip 3: High-speed in Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden is a place for high-altitude tours. Mount Jenner offers scenic ascents. Since a new cable car is currently being built and ski operations are closed, the slopes belong to ski tourers this winter. The Große and Kleine Reibn, Watzmannkarr, and Hoher Göll also make the hearts of experienced ski tourers beat faster. Among the classics for ski tourers is the Götschen, where you can hike to the summit via a former ski run. The small ski resorts of Hochschwarzeck (ski touring day on Wednesdays) and Rossfeld also offer easy tours. The Explorer Hotel Berchtesgaden is always just a stone's throw away.

Tip 4: Kitzbühel can also be a ski tour

The Explorer Hotels have long since made a name for themselves as base camps for skiers, snowboarders, and ski tourers. Everything here is tailored to the needs of winter sports enthusiasts – from the varied breakfast buffet to the workbench in the lounge where you can put the finishing touches on your skis. Since Explorer Hotels are generally located in the immediate vicinity of the ski area, guests staying at the Kitzbühel hotel can put on their skins and begin their ski tour just a few meters from the hotel door. For advanced skiers, the region offers numerous ski tour areas such as Kelchsau and Wilder Kaiser. Numerous ascents reward you with magnificent views and the good feeling of having made it under your own steam. For beginners and those who decide at short notice, a signposted route leads up to Harschbichl, the local mountain of St. Johann in Tirol, home to the first Tyrolean Explorer Hotel.

"You can fully enjoy a ski tour on this route," explains hotel manager Daniel. Numerous huts later invite you to treat yourself to Kaiserschmarrn (sweet pancakes) or Kaspressknödel (cheese dumplings). And then you descend to the hotel on the slopes. Ski tourer evenings are held on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Tip 5: Zillertal – Endless Tours

The Zillertal is also a paradise for ski tourers. Classic tours include the routes to Schönbichl, Rastkogel, and Ahornspitze. "You can save a few meters of elevation gain by using a ski lift every now and then," explains Simone, the manager of the Explorer Hotel Zillertal, located in Kaltenbach at the entrance to the ski area. Like all hotel managers, she is happy to arrange a mountain guide for challenging tours. Those who prefer a more leisurely approach to the slopes can choose the tour to the Arbiskogelhütte in the Gerlosstein ski area. Ski tourer evenings are held here on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Tip 6: Beginners love the Montafon

The Montafon also offers great routes for beginners. From the Explorer Hotel Montafon near Gaschurn, it's just a stone's throw to the Silvretta Biehlerhöhe, the ideal starting point for ski tours of all difficulty levels. Beginners often choose the route to the Lindauerhütte. At 3,312 meters, Piz Buin, Vorarlberg's highest mountain, should be reserved for experienced hikers or those accompanied by a mountain guide. Everyone will be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views.

Tip 7: Go to the Wurzeralm during a full moon

Full moon nights have a very special charm in Hinterstoder, Upper Austria. On these evenings, the newly opened Explorer Hotel Hinterstoder is bustling with activity. Ski tourers are gearing up for their evening ascent. In the Wurzeralm ski area, they not only have a dedicated ascent track during the day, but on full moon nights and every Wednesday, the touring evenings entice them to ascend under their own steam. The nearby Totes Gebirge, the Schrocken, and classic areas such as the Wilde and the Grosse Priel also enjoy a special reputation among ski tourers and are all easily accessible from the Explorer Hotel base camp.

There are now seven Explorer Hotels in the Alpine region, all of which are also considered ideal accommodations for ski tourers. These trendy, designer budget hotels offer everything a winter sports enthusiast needs – and do without the things they don't. The Explorer Breakfast, for example, already enjoys cult status. Here, you can fry your own omelet in the pan to your heart's content. A sauna, steam bath, and fitness room ensure relaxation after a ski tour and a day on the slopes. At the workbench, you can not only prepare skis but also talk shop. Each hotel works with ski schools, mountain guides, and ski rental companies, who also offer beginners tips and equipment for their first attempts at touring.

Explorer Hotels are among the most exciting German hotel projects of recent years. The group aims to operate 40 properties by 2027. After the hotels in Oberstdorf, Neuschwanstein, Berchtesgaden, Kitzbühel, Montafon and Kaltenbach in the Zillertal, the seventh hotel will soon be opening in Hinterstoder at the start of the winter season. Number 8 will follow in the Ötztal. All of the hotels are characterized externally by their distinctive shingle cladding. Inside, innovation and ecological responsibility are the trump cards.
