Even a zero counts for success. Every egg that ends up on the table or in the pan at breakfast in an Explorer Hotel has a zero in its so-called producer code. This represents the organic farming of the chickens. This zero is essential – and is only a small part of a comprehensive concept with which one of the most exciting new hotels in recent years is causing a stir in the German-speaking Alpine region. The Allgäu-based hotel group not only brings the idea of trendy budget hotels to the mountains, but also combines design with ecological responsibility and appeals to a sporty target group regardless of age or income.
Nine hotels already exist, and the 10th is currently being built in Farchant in the Zugspitz region. Tracing the trail of a success story. The success is based on a concept. The hotels are visually distinctive. Designed in the style of an Alpine farmhouse—a large barn complex is attached to the residential building—and clad in shingles, every guest immediately recognizes their hotel. Be it in Oberstdorf, Nesselwang in the Allgäu region, Berchtesgaden, Montafon in Austria, St. Johann in Tyrol, Zillertal, Hinterstoder in Upper Austria, Ötztal in Tyrol, Bad Kleinkirchheim in Carinthia, and soon near Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the Zugspitze.
100 rooms, each measuring 21 square meters, with practical extras for the sporty guest, plus a sauna, fitness room, and large breakfast bar: "Those who spend the whole day outdoors doing winter sports, biking, or hiking will enjoy the hotel as a base camp," explains Jürnjakob Reisigl. The focus is on sporty guests of all ages and incomes who want to explore and enjoy the mountains.
It all begins in the deep south. Eleven years ago, not only was a new hotel built just outside Oberstdorf, but it was also the birth of a new idea that has since attracted a lot of attention in the industry, won awards, and is in high demand among guests.
"Explorer Hotels combine the budget hotel concept with a sporty touch and the highest ecological standards," explain their founders and managing directors, Katja Leveringhaus and Jürnjakob Reisigl. In just a few years, this triad has evolved into a distinctive brand of its own, attracting an increasing number of regular guests. This summer, it will open its tenth hotel in Farchant near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This success has made the search for a new location easier. "More and more places are approaching us and want to have an Explorer Hotel," reports the business economist.
The two hotel pioneers from Oberstdorf have impressively demonstrated that affordable overnight rates starting at €49.80 and high ecological standards can be reconciled. Their building is based on the passive house principle. "Our hotel in Oberstdorf is the first passive house hotel in Europe," explains Katja Leveringhaus.
Each subsequent hotel follows suit. A highly sophisticated thermal building envelope ensures minimal energy loss, while solar and photovoltaic systems and a biogas condensing boiler maximize energy generation. Even the heat given off by guests positively "heats up" the energy balance. "An Explorer Hotel," says founder Reisigl, "is particularly sustainable in its construction." The ecological hotel concept includes all energy-saving measures, but also a sustainable local purchasing policy that emphasizes regional products and environmentally certified suppliers. Regional service providers are primarily used in the construction of new hotels. A restaurant was deliberately omitted to promote local value creation. Sports and leisure activities are also implemented with regional partners.
The hotel founders combine several trends and customer requests in their concept. "More and more guests want to vacation with a clear conscience," says Katja Leveringhaus, referring to her ecological hotel concept. The success of the budget concept, which was brought to the mountains by the Explorer Hotels, demonstrates that this is also possible at affordable prices and without any frills. And the desire for communication is also satisfied in an Explorer Hotel. An interactive community concept offers guests the opportunity to get active on the Explorer Wall. It's even easier at the large workbench found in the lobby of every hotel. Anyone preparing their skis or bike for the next day here quickly strikes up a conversation with others. And the walk to the bar isn't far.
