A challenging and unique road bike tour through three countries
With Bad Kleinkirchheim, you've chosen the ideal starting point for your road bike tour, as this small Austrian community is located not far from the Italian and Slovenian borders. It's the perfect starting point for taking in the scenery from all three countries.
Start at the Explorer Hotel in Bad Kleinkirchheim and turn left towards Radenthein. You'll reach the small community after about 6.5 km. At the end of the main road, turn right and cycle towards Döbriach, always towards Lake Millstatt.
Once you reach the lake, there's a climb of approximately 230 meters via Glanz to Feistritz an der Drau. After a short, steep descent, the route continues to 1,110 m above sea level, over the Windische Höhe. Now you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Carinthian Dolomites as you roll down the next steep descent into the Gailtal Valley to Feistritz/Geil. The Italian border is slowly getting closer, as you soon arrive in Travisio.
Once you reach Travisio, you cross the Austrian/Italian border. In Goggau, you switch to the well-developed and scenic cycle path. Now you continue to Gostilnaponca, where the border crossing into Slovenia is located.
Once you arrive in Slovenia, you have a clear view of the Karawanks. Now it's off to the famous World Cup ski resort of Kranjska Gora, the ideal place for your well-deserved lunch break, as you've already covered 60 km.
Refreshed, you now cycle uphill over the Wurzen Pass to reach the highest point back into Austria. Caution is advised here, as the Wurzen Pass is a short but challenging climb of over 3 km.
After successfully completing this stage, you continue towards Villach through the district of Völkerdorf. Via Feld am See, we reach Radentheim. Now it's time to pedal again – the final climb of 300 meters follows, to get back to the Explorer Hotel in Bad Kleinkirchheim.
