A varied road bike tour through Austria, Italy, and Slovenia
Boredom is definitely out of the question today, because there's plenty to see! Bad Kleinkirchheim is located near the border with Italy and Slovenia - an ideal starting point for exploring all three countries.
The starting point is Paternion. From here, it's a leisurely 2 km downhill ride until you reach Feistritz an der Drau. Then the first significant climb begins, reaching Kreuzen on the flat, where you've already conquered the first 500 meters of elevation gain on the 10 km route.
After a short, steep descent, you continue cycling over the Windische Höhe, which is located at 1,110 m above sea level. This is followed by another steep descent into the Gailtal Valley to Feistritz/Geil. Here, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Carinthian Dolomites as you slowly approach Italy.
Arriving in Travisio, you cross the Austrian/Italian border. In Goggau, you switch to the well-developed and scenic cycle path. You are now getting closer and closer to the border crossing into Slovenia, which is located in Gostilnaponca.
Once you arrive in Slovenia, you have a clear view of the Karawanks. You've already covered 60 km in the famous World Cup ski resort of Kranjska Gora – the perfect time for your lunch break :) Well-fortified, you now tackle the climb over the Wurzen Pass to cross back into Austria at the highest point. Caution is advised here, as the Wurzen Pass is a short but challenging climb of over 3 km.
Now you continue towards Villach through the Völkerdorf district. From there, you cycle a nearly flat 30 km past the Drava River back to the starting point in Paternion.
Enough for today! In the bar at the Explorer Hotel, you sit back and relax and look back at the great photos you took today. The effort was definitely worth it, right? ;)
