TOP excursion destination in Berchtesgaden: the pilgrimage church in Maria Gern
The pilgrimage church in Maria Gern was built in 1708 and impresses with its rich interior decorations, stucco decor, and votive tablets. The baroque building with its onion dome is a symbol of the pilgrimage to Maria Gern, which reached its peak in the 18th century. Today, it is one of the most beautiful rural churches in all of Bavaria.
On the site of the former pilgrim's hostel from the 17th century, the Maria Gern Inn now stands, which delights its guests with Bavarian delicacies.
If you arrive by car, you'll find several parking spaces right next to the church. Maria Gern is also a great destination for a beautiful hike. From Berchtesgaden, take the Soleleitungsweg and the Königsweg up to the Reitbichl mountain with its church. You can then hike back via the Marxen and the Lockstein, which is considered the most beautiful viewpoint over Berchtesgaden.
