A low-lying snowfield in the Alps: the Ice Chapel beneath the Watzmann
The snowfield results from the avalanches that descend from the Watzmann East Face in winter and spring. The hollow space in the middle of the massive ice field is called the "Ice Chapel." Its entrance resembles a glacier gate with various shafts and passages.
And the good news is: Despite climate change, this natural spectacle, which is one of Bavaria's 100 most beautiful geotopes, will likely remain for a while, as new avalanches occur every year.
Curious? Then we'll tell you the best way to get to the ice cave:
The best way to get to the ice cave is from the Explorer Hotel to the Schönau boat landing stage and then drive to the boat landing stage in St. Bartholomä. From here, a hiking trail leads to the Ice Chapel in about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Caution: The Ice Chapel is in constant danger of collapsing, and entering it is life-threatening! You can also take a great look from the outside and take photos. Don't forget to tag the picture with #ExplorerMoments—we're curious 😛
