The "Royal" Villa in Ettal
If you're familiar with the royal palaces in Hohenschwangau, then you already know the taste of King Ludwig II. His Linderhof Palace complex in the Graswang Valley near Ettal was designed just as magnificently.
Should a bit of culture be on your agenda during your vacation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen? Perfect, now you just have to decide which day you'll take "off" to visit Linderhof Palace.
And here comes the kicker: Linderhof Palace has recently been officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This puts the small but magnificent complex among the world's most important cultural sites – an absolute must-see for your trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen!
Linderhof - the Fairytale King's Favorite Palace
Linderhof was King Ludwig II's absolute favorite palace – and, incidentally, the only one he actually completed during his lifetime. Inspired by Versailles, he created a complex here that impresses not with its size, but with its sheer attention to detail. There's sparkle and brilliance everywhere: stucco, gold, mirrors, and the finest furniture transform every room into a work of art. The highlight? Clearly the Mirrored Bedroom, which, with its sophisticated architecture, appears even larger than it actually is.
Excursion tip between culture and hiking :)
Tip: Linderhof Palace is also a great day trip destination for families. It's also on the way to the royal palaces in Hohenschwangau. So perfect for a "King Ludwig and his Palaces" day ;)
