Learn how cheese is made in the Fellhorn Nature Reserve near Oberstdorf!
In Germany's highest and southernmost alpine pasture in the Fellhorn Nature Reserve near Oberstdorf, you can follow the journey from milk to cheese every summer.
The 80 cows that live on the Schlappold Alp in summer produce approximately 90,000 liters of milk in 100 days on the mountain pasture, from which about 9 tons of cheese, as well as yogurt, butter, and curd cheese, are made. If you're not satisfied enough from snacking in between, you can also take a piece of cheese to take home directly from the Allgäuer Hütte.
You can park at the valley station of the Fellhornbahn cable car and either walk up or take the cable car. The alpine pasture can be reached in about 30 minutes from the Schlappoldsee station and offers cheese factory tours in summer (slide show & guided tour / duration approx. 2 hours).
