Only for experienced mountaineers: the ridge traverse from the Zugspitze to the Alpspitze
Why this challenging ridge traverse in the Eastern Alps has such a cheerful name is, to be honest, a mystery to us. If you have any ideas, please let us know ;) Back to the basics:
The Jubiläumsgrat is a 5 km long ridge traverse that stretches from the summit of the Zugspitze to the summit of the Alpspitze and almost always runs above 2,600 m. The trail has only a few secured sections. Anyone hiking here should be very sure-footed and free from vertigo! You should also, of course, bring all the necessary climbing equipment and a safety rope for the climbing sections.
The Jubiläumsgrat hike on the Zugspitze usually takes 9 hours. However, in an emergency, it can be split into two days and spend the night in the ridge hut (bivouac box). This emergency shelter between the Mittlerer and Äußerer Höllentalspitze provides safe sleeping space for 12 people. There's no water or anything else. The hut is a kind of bunker for sleeping.
If reading this description already makes you crave a drink, then the Jubiläumsgrat is probably not for your vacation in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Don't worry, there are plenty of other challenging tours in the Zugspitze region.
