Directly on the Zugspitze and close to the hotel: The beautiful Eibsee
Honestly, there are probably countless reasons why you have to visit the Eibsee at the Zugspitze during your stay at the Explorer Hotel Garmisch.
A few quick facts about the Eibsee: The Eibsee has eight islands and was formed by a huge landslide almost 4,000 years ago. That's it for the history of the lake;)
During your summer vacation in Garmisch, you can refresh yourself in the Eibsee at 20-22 °C, try stand-up paddling, or explore the Eibsee on your own with a pedal boat.
Tip: A round trip on the "Reserl" excursion boat will take you to the most beautiful corners of the lake.
Activities at Eibsee near Zugspitze
If you're looking for something more active along the shore, then the 7.2 km walk along Eibsee is perfect for you! Here you'll have a fantastic view of Zugspitze. The walk around Eibsee takes about 2 hours on foot.
If you prefer hiking, then this is also the right place for you. The beautiful ascent to the Zugspitze summit begins at Eibsee.

When is the best time to visit Lake Eibsee?
You can visit Lake Eibsee all year round. However, be advised that it's particularly busy on weekends and during the holidays. Our tip: set off early in the morning so that you have the lake almost to yourself.
How do you get to Eibsee?
Unfortunately, it's a bit far on foot from the Explorer Hotel.
- Bus (free during your stay): Line 5 from Farchant to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, change at Marienplatz to line 9840 to Greinau (total time approx. 1h 15)
- Train: by train from Farchant to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, change there to the cog railway (total time approx. 2h)
- Car: there is a paid parking lot directly at the lake (journey time: 26 min)
As you can see, it will probably not be just a day trip to Eibsee during your holiday in Garmisch :) When you return to the hotel in the evening, you will certainly end the day with a Round it off with a mojito at the Explorer Bar. Because the sight of this shimmering blue lake immediately gives you that Caribbean feeling, which you'll soon want to quench.
