Family Experience: Through the Rocky Gorge of the Vogelgesang Gorge
A rocky gorge with a doctorate? "Aaah yes, can't be that exciting," you think? Wrong thought 😎 We'll show you why a visit is absolutely worth it and also explain where the gorge got its name. Ready?
In about 20 minutes you'll reach the Dr. Vogelgesang Gorge near Spital am Pyhrn in Upper Austria. At 1.5 km long, it's not only the longest accessible gorge in Upper Austria, but also the second longest gorge in all of Austria! (Pssst, the longest gorge in Austria is the Raabklamm near Weiz - just in case you end up on your chair on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" 😜 )
What is the Dr. Vogelgesang Gorge?
The 1.5 km long gorge is a wildly romantic rocky ravine. The path through the gorge consists of approximately 500 wooden and stone steps, which are easily accessible. The steps and walkways are thoroughly inspected before opening and throughout the summer.
This means that even children can safely experience the natural spectacle of the rushing water.
And where does the doctorate come from?
The Dr. Vogelgesang Gorge was named after Moritz Vogelgesang, the former municipal doctor from Spital am Pyhrn. He was chairman of the Beautification Association and campaigned in 1906 to have this gorge made accessible.
