At the foot of the Untersberg: The deep Almbachklamm gorge in Berchtesgaden
A visit to this natural experience in Marktschellenberg near Berchtesgaden is particularly recommended in summer, where the many trees and cold water provide a pleasant cooling effect on hot days.
The deep gorge along the Almbach stream was blasted into the rock with 29 bridges and footbridges, as well as 320 steps and a tunnel. From May to October, you can usually watch the crystal-clear torrent plunge into the valley on your hike through the Almbachklamm.
But the gorge itself isn't the only highlight: At the entrance to the Almbachklamm in Marktschellenberg is Germany's oldest marble ball mill. Chunks of marble have been ground into precious balls here since 1683. At the end of this gorge, you'll find the Theresienklause, a 17-meter-long dam named after the Bavarian Queen Therese.
Tip: Combine a visit to the Almachklamm with a circular hike to Maria Gern. This takes about four hours and offers even more views of the surrounding nature.
You can park for free at the Almbachklamm parking lot, and there are various inns available for snacks.
