First mountain air, then mountain cheese

The Ackernalm near Thiersee is one of those destinations where even the drive there makes you want to spend a day outdoors. Nestled at an altitude of around 1,350 meters , the alpine pasture, mountain inn, and organic cheese dairy are situated in the heart of the Tyrolean mountains. This makes it the highest alpine dairy in Austria. From June to the end of September, around 120 dairy cows spend their summer grazing here. Their milk is processed fresh daily in the dairy.

So if you'd like to know where the cheese on your snack actually comes from, you've come to the right place. At the Ackernalm organic cheese dairy, you can get insights into cheese production and then buy the products directly from the Almladl shop.

This is what you can expect

1. Organic cheese straight from the alpine pasture: Mountain cheese, Emmental, and the "Ackern Taler" (Tilsite-style) are produced directly on the Ackernalm alpine pasture. The Ackern Taler is available in various flavors, including plain, fenugreek, caraway, pepper, or chives.
2. Even more from the cheese dairy: Depending on availability, you can also get fresh alpine butter, buttermilk and yogurt at Almladl.
3. Snacks to take away: In addition to their own dairy products, you will also find sausage and bacon products as well as farmer's bread from local producers.
4. Stop for refreshments at the alpine pasture: The Ackernalm mountain inn is located right next to the cheese dairy. There, the cheese also ends up on your plate – for example in Kaspressknödel (cheese dumplings) or on an alpine salad with mountain cheese.
5. And if the Almladl is closed: In summer, there is a "trust refrigerator" in front of the cheese factory where you can stock up on cheese and other specialties.

From the Explorer Hotel Bayrischzell to the Ackernalm

From Bayrischzell, drive towards Thiersee and Kufstein via the Ursprung Pass . At Landl, turn off towards the Ackernalm. The final section is a well-maintained, toll road leading up to the alpine pasture. The road is open from approximately May to October , depending on the weather.

You can't get directly to the Ackernalm by public transport. The BergBus 396 runs on weekends and public holidays in 2026 from Bayrischzell via the Ursprungpass to Landl and on towards Thiersee. For a regular visit to the Ackernalm, traveling by car is therefore much simpler.

Why not turn your cheese shopping trip into a tour? The Ackernalm circular route leads from Landl up to the alpine pasture by mountain bike. The 16.8-kilometer route with an elevation gain of around 710 meters is quite a climb – a well-deserved snack at the top is definitely in order.

Want even more elevation gain? The mountain tour to the Hinteres Sonnwendjoch starts right at the Ackernalm. The circular route is approximately 10.9 kilometers long , climbs about 848 meters in altitude , and takes about 5 hours . From the summit at 1,956 meters, the view extends far across the surrounding mountains in good weather.
