Are you ready for a journey back to the 19th century? Neuschwanstein Castle was originally built as a private retreat for King Ludwig II. Whether he ever imagined that more than 10,000 visitors would walk through its rooms today is a whole other story ;). But what exactly makes Neuschwanstein Castle so fascinating?
Exciting facts about Neuschwanstein Castle
#1. From castle ruins to Disney symbol
On the site where the famous Neuschwanstein Castle stands today, there used to be two small castles. Very close to the two castle ruins stood Hohenschwangau Castle, inhabited by King Maximilian II of Bavaria and his family. Even as a youth, King Ludwig had the idea of transforming these ruins into a fairytale castle. On September 5, 1869, the time had finally come.
#2. Innovation to Hohenschwangau Castle
Running water, dumbwaiter, flush toilets, forced-air heating. Ludwig II had the best of the best. He even had a battery-operated bell installed in his private rooms. By pressing it, the servants could read off a signal board in the anteroom to tell them which room they were being called to. Neuschwanstein Castle even had telephone connections! Apparently, the cable even reached as far as Hohenschwangau Castle.
#3. The special element 🦢
The interior design of Neuschwanstein Castle features the recurring element of the soaring swan. This symbolizes purity and is the heraldic animal of the Counts of Schwangau, to which Ludwig II belonged. This bird can be seen everywhere, on the faucets, stained-glass windows, and even on the roof of the royal carriage.
#4. 17 years of construction work
Three more years, and Berlin Airport would have rivaled the castle. Around 300 workers were employed for 17 years in 10-hour shifts. Work was also carried out at night using very bright carbide lamps. King Ludwig II rewarded his builders and even paid double for the night shifts. Even then, Neuschwanstein became the region's largest economic factor—and it remains so today.
#5. The unsolved mystery
Even as a teenager, King Ludwig II suffered from depression. In his old age, he completely switched to a nighttime routine. From 1886 onward, he spent every hour in his palace. In 1886, on Whitsunday, Ludwig was found with his psychiatrist Bernhard in Lake Starnberg. The mystery of how the two drowned has not been solved to this day.
Psst..did you know?
The most beautiful view of the royal Neuschwanstein Castle can be found from the famous Marienbrücke above the Pöllat Gorge. From parking lot P4, it's about a 45-minute walk to the bridge. Simply follow the signs! Please note, however, that the path to the bridge is only open in good weather.
To avoid long waits, you should arrive at the ticket center on time or buy your ticket online in advance. ;) If you only want to see the castle from the outside, you don't need a ticket. The castle courtyard is also free.
